Karl Lagerfeld’s cameo designing for Fendi shares none of the show-stopping production values of the Parisian main event. The catwalk is modest, the room small, and the crowd packed with preening local socialites. Yet even without the A-list, icebergs, volcanos or string quartet, this Milan collection still has plenty of Chanel-ish traits. he silhouette was proper and feminine but provocatively flirty too – narrow at the waist and broad at the knee-top hemline – and styled against hairspray-saturated updos, who-are-you-looking-at big shades and disconcerting gold-painted eyes. Ever-inventive, he punted a new body-part to flash, hacking out shoulder-baring panels in a perforated suede jacket. And as this was a Fendi show, there was plenty of fur; wisps on shoe-straps and slivers lining flower-beaded totes. There was even a summer fur coat or two. Unnecessary? Yes. Fendi? Very much so.
