I have recently started following a television series set in Canada at the end on 1800. What I like about it is to see how relationships – between friends, collegues or romantic liasons – revolved around respect and politeness, so that people didn’t talk much about themselves or they private life, they were humble and showed their feeling with a delicasy we have somehow lost. Men wore hats and jackets whenever they went out, and women were always elegant and very charming without showing any nudity. There is charm and allure in their way of talking and in the clothes they wore, and that reminded me a little of the Paris fashion show of Valentino. The show started with black or white short lace dress worn with flat sandals and studded square handbags, to continue with romantic summer dresses perfect for the day and the evening. Not everything was wearable perhaps, some of the skirts were completely seethrough and I don’t think many of us have the occasion or the boldness to wear them, nonetheless the long gowns at the end of the show were extremely feminine and absolutely exquisite, some richly ornated with flower applications, sequines and pearls, others simply made of the most delicate embroideries. New versions of the legendary Valentino red dresses resulted stylish and ladylike, never vulgar, and the ankle lenght and long sleeves proved to be fresh and contemporary. I think this might be the best collecion Grazia Chiuri e Pier Paolo Piccioli have designed since the real Valentino Garavani left the brand. One more thing…Freja Beha Erichsen closed the show looking absolutely amazing in a long, embroidered romantic gown, a new idea for a designer wedding gown (after all, Valentino is the only brand that can claim to have designed the bridal gowns for Jackie Kennedy and J.Lo, among others)
